There are many reasons why your dentures may stop fitting as well as they should. Changes in the gums, new dentures, and even damage to the prosthetics themselves can sometimes make it difficult to keep them securely in place. For these times, you may want to temporarily improve their hold with a denture adhesive. Here’s how to use it right, and to make sure you’ve cleaned it off your dentures properly.
How To Use Denture Adhesive
There are several different types of denture adhesive available, but which one you use is a matter of personal preference. Different brands and styles can vary in price and consistency, but they all work in similar ways. Here’s how to use each of them
Denture Adhesive Cream
- Clean your dentures thoroughly / dry them completely.
- Apply adhesive to the denture in short strips, avoiding the edges. Be sure you don’t apply too much, as it can ooze out and make a mess.
- Rinse your mouth.
- Press the denture into place, holding it firmly for a few seconds. Bite down to secure it.
Denture Adhesive Powder
- Clean dentures thoroughly but leave them wet.
- Spray the powder very lightly and evenly on all surfaces that contact your gums and roof of your mouth.
- Rinse your mouth.
- Shake off any loose powder.
- Put your dentures in your mouth and press down to set them in place.
Denture Adhesive Strips
- Thoroughly clean and dry your dentures.
- Using clean, dry hands, remove the strips from the packaging.
- Moisten one strip at a time with water.
- Attach the strips as shown in the directions, keeping them away from your denture’s edges, but don’t overlap them. They can be torn or cut into shape as needed.
- Rinse your mouth with water.
- Press your denture into place, holding onto it firmly, and bite down on it.
Cleaning Denture Adhesive
When you’re ready to take your dentures out of your mouth, first swish warm water and gently pull the dentures out. Put them down somewhere safe, such as a countertop covered with a towel. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, scrub away the adhesive residue from your gums with toothpaste.
To clean your dentures, get a separate toothbrush and scrub the entire prosthetic. You can use mild hand soap or denture cleansing products to clean them. Be sure to floss between each tooth and then rinse well. If you are done wearing them, store them in a cup of water or denture soak for the night.
Remember, unless they’re new, if your dentures need adhesive, make an appointment with your dentist to have them checked. They may need relining, or it may simply be time to upgrade to a new pair.
